I am officially scarred for life...

I've heard some pretty grizzly stories in my time, both my sister and dad are doctors who've worked in emergency departments. Honestly nothing comes close to the story I heard yesterday morning from a co-worker.

It made me sick then, it makes me sick now. No horror movie writer could ever conceive of something as gruesome, and certainly no one would be willing to produce the special effects...I've tried and failed to re-tell the story, the words just won't come out. It is far worse than death for the poor guy involved.

The accident happened at a mining town, but honestly it could have happened anywhere - it was a cycling accident involving only the rider and a non-flat surface!

Scary scary stuff...

Wheee something challenging at work, we get this request for an in process automated measurement system to replace a manual stop work and tape measure affair. Nothing out of the ordinary there. The specifications are a little rough though. They want to know a distance to within +/- 0.5mm (they don't really need this level of accuracy for what they're doing but don't like to make things easy on us - I'd like to suggest the tape measure wasn't up to this but haven't the heart to imply the operator's claims are so flakey), so anyway better yet it requires measuring at least two other distances to +/- 0.25mm to achieve this. Still, that sounds do-able...except for the fact it's over a range of more than a thousand times that, in a dusty environment hot enough to fry any electronics. To top it off there's bits flying everywhere with explosive force and they want an average failure rate of less than once a year.

Apparently these restrictions don't apply to their own work, the internal mechanical designs have the weight of a related part estimated to within an accuracy of +/- 153,000kg(!) Funny how people's acceptable degree of accuracy changes depending on who's problem it is to sort out... ;)

Time table for selling my cars (both of them) has stepped up a notch, so if anyone's interested speak soon or forever hold your piece ;) Be looking at ~$8k for the '88 rx7 turbo convertible manual, and ~$2k mark for the '91 323 hatchback auto. (These prices are based on the low end of the range these cars typically sell for according to The Red Book)

And as obligatory....

The Everything Test
There are many different types of tests on

the internet today. <lj:music>Ben Folds Five - Rocking the Suburbs</lj:music>

Just saw "Babel". I can't think how to describe that movie, it's such a strange mix that it's difficult to decide if I enjoyed it (There are three very loosely linked stories spanning Morocco, The US/Mexico and Japan)...certainly the film is engrossing, possibly a little unecessarily shocking in rare moments, but it's really hard to judge such things.

Got to wake up in a few hours for third day of my new job. It's absolutely staggering how large this company is compared to the previous places I've worked. There are five seperate offices in the Perth CBD alone (the head quarters are in Sydney.) The one I work in is only mid-sized and still occupies four entire floors of the building its located in. The level of organisation is extremely impressive, although that does mean the processes are at times a little bureaucratic. Lots of other engineers starting now, although the only other one I knew before (another UWA EE grad) hasn't started yet. Most of the other fresh grads are mechanical or civil, with people from all uni's it seems. The first couple of days have been very pleasent, and I think if I don't like this job I'll have to leave Perth to find anything that might be more appropriate, so fingers crossed.

Learnt/increased experience in many useful skills, got more marks than I needed, spent lots of reasonably fun late nights of excessive tea consumption, bad food, bad singing to out of date songs, and otherwise being silly with various other honours students who lived in the same building, enjoyed seeing thousands of dollars wasted as a fellow student set some of my supervisor's equipment on fire, and otherwise made the best of it all...but it still sucked >____<

'07....I'm just gonna hate you now and avoid any disappointment >:(

actually the last week, inc. most of the '07 part has been pretty good, but one bad thing today soured my mood enough to let this one get submitted, call it foreshadowing :P

    <lj:music>The Trammps - Disco Inferno</lj:music>

So the crew of Top Gear went on a caravan holiday (Season 8 Episode 6, if anyone hasn't seen this they must...best Top Gear ever.) Anyway as they enter Dorset (the region of England with their booked camp site) Richard Hammond, who booked it, frantically tries to remember the name of the camp site, and then giving up stammers "Dave....the camp site's called Dave."

I swear that's not as ridiculous a guess as it might seem. I'm used to my name causing the odd bit of confusion - in a 21 person geometry and trigonometry class at school we had 5 Daves. The teacher used to side-step the problem by qualifying his comments "Shut up Dave ...all of you."

Tonight I realised that once again my name may have been causing a little confusion. I finally added starph0x to my msn list (previously communicating through ICQ) and realised that we both have our MSN names set simply to "Dave". It's worth pointing out that the two "ahaha" did not come from the same person, so anyone considering dragging us into a group conversation ... be afraid! ;)

Update: One of my friends is now complaining that he actually has a third "Dave" on his msn list!

So I managed to go a whole night at uni with no weird 3:30am incident.

Unfortunately that was last night, tonight was a little different...

I was kicking around not doing any work for a bit, and discussing respectively owned jap import sports cars with a fellow final year guy in another department. This particular owner was less enthusiastic than most, having a non-turbo engine and yet still managing to spend a fortune on repairs. I was explaining how my turbo seems to stand up to pretty much everything including the track and drag strip.

When my fellow petrol-head went back to work I decided to go for a bit of a joy ride. Came back 5 min later with a warmed up engine and convinced this same guy to come for a ride (and yes, at you guessed it, 3:30am.) We had a little fun, then pulled in the servo on the way back to get some supplies. Of course what should befall the person who was espousing his car's reasonable reliability than a break down. Engine is turning, can hear spark plugs firing but it just doesn't seem to want to go through the last ignition phase succesfully. Tried deflooding it to no avail, and that's about as much as I can do without tools.

Guess I'm not going anywhere before my 9am lecture...Which is ok I guess since I wasn't really planning too anyway.

Finish off with massive congrats in anarch_kitty's direction on the engagement, apologies to bonta_kun for being late to discuss things earlier in the day - sleep got the better of me for a while, and lucky last this solid piece of advice from a free footy I got earlier today:

Everyone got that?

edit: Tried to start my car again just now, and all is well. Guessing it was some kind of flooding or a temporary electrical glitch (Rotaries seem to love to do that kind of thing.) Important thing is I don't have a huge repair bill and it's back where it belongs at my home now (home as in uni, not my less common other home)

Sitting in my lab at uni in the early hours of the morning, I am reminded of what happened when I was still doing the same at 3:30am last night...

Left to grab a drink and managed to get locked out (I swear this is not something I do very often). My student card (ie. RFID door key) was sitting in my wallet, which was now stuck in the lab. This is normally a good sign that it's time to go home, which would be fine except, for comfort's sake, I'd taken my shoes off while working and they were also in the lab. My mobile phone was also sitting in the lab, and likewise all the shrapnel in my wallet, but then who I am going to phone at 3:30am anyway?

At least I had my car keys...so no big deal...except that one of the screws on my license plate had decided to unfasten itself (quite common as it needs a special mounting which only has two screw holes) when it touched the curb (something that's also not uncommon with lowered sports cars in general.) Still that's no drama except that...the tools I need to re-attach it were...you guessed it, in the lab!

No wallet means no money means no taxi either so that wasn't an option.

So I drove home at 3:30am with my license plate on the passenger seat, no drivers license or ID of any kind, no money and no shoes.

Yes officer....I swear this really is my car!

....on reflection I should have called out campus security, but I didn't really feel like sitting in an empty corridor for an hour waiting for some grumpy dude to rock up and tell me how stupid I am.

Meanwhile it must be about time to venture out again, better pack a student card, wallet, keys, phone, rations and a pair of pliers or wrench just in case!

Mmmmmmmm.....rations

So one of the guys who works in the same lab as me at uni came back from Mexico two days ago. Sitting there flipping through his lonely planet Spanish phrase book that he'd left on the desk this afternoon and found the "Social" section. Some choice phrases on offer there including but far from limited to
"Can I buy you a drink?"
and just to make sure the reply is clear
"Your ego is massively inflated"

It quickly gets a tad more "optimistic"...
"Would you like to come in?"
"Do you have a condom?"
"I don't want to do anything without protection"

...and finally downright surreal
"I can't get it up - Sorry"

Try and visualise some poor guy frantically flipping through his phrase book to explain that one!
At least he'll be ready for the response as "Piss off" and "I never want to see you again" were conveniently on the next page XD

...and now back to test <strike>study</strike> cramming eheh

edit: in case you're not familiar with my locations, livejournal has politely turned it into a google maps query :P

A very relaxing weekend nears completion. Spent about half of it studying for test and preparing for some mock negotiations that are both tomorrow (well today heh). <lj:music>Nickelback - See you at the show</lj:music>

Wheeee, submitted 45 page digital microelectronics device physics assignment this afternoon (42 pages of which written in the last 15 hours)
Assignments where one tiny mistake implies rewriting 2/3 of it are not especially cool
group members who go to singapore and then get drunk rather than helping to the small extent they can aren't particularly ool either

BUT, the Nickelback concert tonight was very very cool XD
Only managed to squeeze in one hour of sleep before hand, but it was more than enough to keep me awake once it got going.

Wasn't expecting so much, even though there are a few Nickelback songs I love, but they went through all the very best songs, not really giving special attention to the new album. Also Chad Kroeger really knows how to work a crowd, getting everyone to sing along and have a great time. Perhaps a little too much magnesium or whatever they were using for some of the super bright lighting effects, it was quite blinding and headache inducing at times.
A fantastic experience though, Thanks nekomancy for buying the tickets :D

And if my writing seems even more incoherent than usual....well yes I should probably get some sleep finally eheh

So I finished my proposal at midday on the dot yesterday. That took an all night session, not least because it was so hard to cut down to the word limit, and I was completely exhausted. Obviously this meant the logical next thing to do was spend a few hours filling out a long and tedious job application which closed that day -____- Although the arrival of the original Singstar which I ordered off ebay did save the day somewhat XD

And the best bit...I have 5 more assignments due in the next 12 days, and my group members for one of the larger ones, which is the next due, are not going to help much (one is out of the country until after it is due, other can't help for another three days.... YIPPEEEEEE!) *sits alone at uni getting extremely drained*

Expect to here more whining from me :P

in the meantime, some awesome comics
VG Cats Bubble Bobble
VG Cats Kirby

So...my FC RX7's quarter mile is officially...
15.38 sec @ 143km/hr
Isn't that fascinating.....no not really but oh well

For a 1988 electric convertible with everything stock, I was quite happy
Unfortunately I lost quite badly on that run to a Mazda 323 (a much older, crappier model than my 323.) That most definitely was not stock ahaha
The two friends I went down with pulled best times of 17.1 and 17.2 so I wasn't quite the slowest car there eheh

Edit: Think we were the only asians there, and yes I'd definitely have to include myself in that category. Was surrounded by rednecks and I managed to pop a lens out of my glasses while removing a helmet, and spent the next minute trying to pull my car over half blind lol

Possibly loses points for American's badly portraying Britain, bonus points for the only person who's place of birth was revealed was the same as mine (Nottingham), one year off from me though, so unfortunately no I am not the future note writing lesbian :P
I guess that means someone American figured out there is more than one city in England, so hearty congratulations to whoever that was.

Also got my new laptop (a dell inspiron 6400). Feels like a bit of a downgrade from the thinner, lighter, Samsung X50 which also had a more powerful 3d graphics card (Radeon X700 whereas the Dell only has a Radeon X1400, barely half as fast). Apart from being made of heavy plastic instead of light and strong magnesium alloy, the screen, catches, buttons, trim etc. on the Dell just feel plain tacky. It does have the new dual core processor however, also twice as much ram and a larger hd, so it will make certain uni work less frustrating, even if games won't run as nicely. It also has a softer keyboard and touchpad buttons, which was my main reason for switching to the Dell (No point having a nicer laptop if I can't use it a lot without injuring myself - and now there's another friend of mine with the X50 who's sustained hand injuries). So with great sadness I hand the X50 over to my dad, who paid for the Dell (They cost exactly the same price atm, so it's a reasonably fair trade.)
As one friend commented, it just didn't feel right seeing Dave with a nice looking laptop....probably true ehehe
